We reached the end of our first big reading unit! I wanted to celebrate their accomplishments and show them how amazing of readers that they've become. We made ourselves out of paper and wrote about our favorite kind of books inside. The heart chain connects the two hands and their little button says "I love reading this much!" They turned out awesome!

Turkey Surveys
Yesterday the class surveyed each other, they asked each other the questions "Do you like turkey?" They did tally marks for 'yes' or 'no' and then completed their first pie graph. They did awesome as usual. :)

Compassion Lessons
We've been focusing on compassion and empathy this month. For learning about empathy, I will show the kids a photograph of a child showing an emotion and then we talk about what our bodies and faces do when we are feeling that emotion. For example these are worried and disgusted:
Then we've been reading some picture books where the characters show compassion. This has given us some ideas about how we can be compassionate. The kids have been challenged to try and use the word compassionate at home and school!
Masking Tape Art
We found a cute art project on Pinterest using masking tape and watercolor and I knew it would be perfect to use for card making. One of our classmates returned from a long trip yesterday and we got to make her some cute cards! The class learned a little about how to write a letter and got to draw pictures for her. Here is their work!

Owl Visit
The Woodland Park Zoo does an awesome workshop on owls. They came to our classroom and taught us all about raptors, then we got to see a real live owl up close! The class did an awesome job staying quiet and still during the presentation so the owl wouldn't get scared. After, we were able to investigate the bones inside of sterilized owl pellets.

Veteran's Day Buddy Work
Our 2nd grade buddies helped us make flags today! We had so much learning about the different parts of the flag and why there are 50 stars and 13 stripes. Our flags turned out great and will look awesome in the gym for our Veteran's Day assembly.

Science Paper Experiment
Today we spent our science time working with all different types of paper! Students got to use super absorbent paper to drop liquid watercolor on, draw on different types of paper with different materials (wax, cardboard, thick, thin, etc.), make paper, weave paper and do leaf rubbings. Our science rotations are busy and messy so I apologize for the lack of pictures!

Fairy Tale Reading
We've been working on learning strategies on how to read books when the words are too hard. This time we worked on reading a story that you are already familiar with, like fairy tales or nursery rhymes. The first book that we practiced with was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Each student got a copy of the book and then practiced telling it to their partners.
