Zero the Hero

We celebrate our 10th day of school by introducing Zero the Hero! He helps numbers get from 9 to 10 or 19 to 20, they would be stuck without Zero the Hero.  We sang a fun song and made puppets to celebrate our 10th day! Zero will return again on the 20th day of school.

New Stations

Here is our new set of stations for the week. I have so much fun picking the stations and this year I love the way we are organizing them.  Each day the students visit two stations, each one lasts 10-15 minutes (we working our way up to 20 minutes). After each day, I move the stations down so they will get to visit all the station in 5 days. We meet before each set of stations so I can introduce new activities and the kids can read the schedule to figure out what they are doing that day.  I love the routine and the kids are really into it also!

This is our new typing station, the kids have to type as many sounds as they can for each picture.  They love getting to search for the letters on the keyboard and they will take turns using the big projector computer. They get to print it when they're done which is very exciting :)

Our magnet station is something that will grow in difficulty every week.  Last week they spelled their names and this week they worked on building sight words.

Our listening station this week used an audiobook and prompted the kids to turn the pages in their books to follow along.  After, they competed an activity to retell the story in order.

Our writing station will stay with us the whole year.  Last week, they wrote names of the kids in our class.  This week they are labeling a picture of school supplies.

This is our rolling station again! Last week they rolled for individual letters.  This week they are rolling to write the first sound of the picture on the dice.

The stamping station was new this week! Students get to search for the right letter stamp to make different words, this week they were school supply words like pencil and crayon.

Our pocket chart station will also stay with us all year. This week our sentence we practiced and wrote was "I see the ______ ."

Paper Airplanes

The class learned how to fold two types of paper airplanes in Ms. Angie's STEAM class today!

Beginning our Writing Workshop

We are full swing into our writing workshop and the kids and I are loving it! We made a "writing club" and came up with a name for ourselves.  The kids voted on "The Writing Stars" as our writing club name  So far, we have started working on books about something that the kids are experts on.  We have books being made about flowers, bugs, boats, chickens and more!

We are learning that our friends in class can be very helpful for giving us ideas.  Today we met with our writing partners and showed them our books, then our partners gave us ideas on what we could add during that day's writing workshop.

We also learned that...when we're done we've just begun!

Dot Day

We celebrated International Dot Day today based on the book The Dot by Peter Reynolds.
We invited our new 3rd grade buddies to come join us and help us make dots using liquid watercolors and coffee filters.

We Love Pete the Cat

We love Pete the Cat in kindergarten! We read all of his books and then I introduce our Pete puppet by having him delivered in a package.  He brings us our first class book and some buttons.

After recess, Pete goes missing and leaves us this note:
He leaves us buttons around the school and we need to go find him! This gives us a chance to explore the new building and meet some teachers.  After his long journey, Pete needed a bath ;)

Then we can come back to the classroom and learn all about sorting using the buttons that Pete brought us.  We sorted by color, shape, size and type.
