Silly Notes

The class got on a roll today with their message station and their notes were SO SILLY.  They were cracking me up! I must say, their handwriting, finger spacing and independence with writing is impressing me more and more every day.

Stations This Week

Magic Mirror Write the Room

I made this activity to make learning our new heart words more exciting.  I flipped the words on the computer before I printed them out.  Then the kids had to use a mirror to figure out the mystery word.  

Sorting Money

This was a station to explore and investigate money while sorting it.  This helped us learn the names and values of the coins.

Clip Matching

This station has many different options, students can do word work style pages (like vowels, missing letters, bossy e) or math pages (number recognition, ten frames, money).  They follow the directions on the page and add clips to the pictures that match what the card is looking for.  Then they can flip it over to check their work and see if they matched correctly. 

STEM Activity with Eggs

Ms. Angie had the kids do a great activity in their STEM lab, they filled eggs with different objects and estimated how far they thought they would roll down a ramp.  Then they rolled it down the ramp and compared it to their estimate.  The kids did such a great job with this activity! 

Eggs and Chicks in Science

We learned all about eggs and how a chick hatches and grows up.  We made mobiles that show a chick in an egg getting ready to hatch.  

We also had mystery eggs, the kids filled their egg with an object from home and wrote three clues about it.  Then they read their clues and we passed the egg around.  

Another fun part of our chick science unit was my mystery egg.  I gave them each an egg and read a poem.  Then they opened it and found these tiny chicks inside! 

 One station that we had was examining real eggs from a variety of different birds like ostriches, emus and quails.  The kids gently passed the eggs around and tried to find the matching card.

Writing Tool: Flaps

One of our goals for making our writing easy to read, is giving ourselves enough space on the page to write our sentences.  Sometimes, even if we plan it out, we run out of room.  To solve this problem, I introduced flaps during a writing lesson.  Students looked back through their writing to find places where they had run out of room.  They re-wrote their sentence on a flap and taped onto the page where they needed more room.  This was a great editing tool!  

Now when they write new books they can use a flap if they want to add more writing but there isn't more room on a page.  

Egg Hunting for Sight Words

We have the most fun egg themed stations this week! One of my favorite is egg hunts around the room for sight words.  I place our new heart words inside eggs, the students have to find an egg, read the word and record it onto the sheet.  Anything with an easter egg is a big deal in kindergarten!
