Tacky the Penguin
We loved reading Tacky the Penguin yesterday! After reading, we worked on identifying the elements of a story including character, setting, problem and solution. Then we got to make our own Tacky the penguins.

Beginning Our Penguin Unit
We will be learning about penguins and other arctic animals this month. We always start off a new unit by writing what we already know and making a list of questions that we would like answered about the topic. As we move through learning about penguins through videos and books, we add to our charts! We will be using science journal pages along the way to document what we've learned.

Stations This Week
In our reading groups, we use all kinds of fun things to sound out words. This week, we are using slinky toys!
Our building/sensory station is featuring these fun Jelly Beads, which I bought on Amazon here.
We are using new materials to practice breaking apart numbers and adding them together in our math station.
In our poetry station, we are working on poems for the heart words 'he' and 'she.'
We will continue to practice putting together sentences using heart words and new words in our pocket chart station. This helps us understand sentence structure, finger spaces, punctuation and capital letters.
We always have a art style station, this week we are doing a January thumbprint page.
We also bringing back our stamping station with two options of a book or worksheet with heart words sentences.

Penguin Glyph and Stations
We have been so busy this week that I totally forgot to take pictures! Here are a few I can share with you from the week:
A glyph is a craft we make based on questions that the students answer, here is the key to our penguin glyph we made.
Here is a penguin matching game we played where students matched word and picture cards.
Here is another station activity from this week called "scooping snowballs." Students would scoop a handful of "snowballs" out of a basket and place them on the mitten. They would then separate them by color and then add the two together. We practiced using math talk with this game by saying "2 and 7 make 9."
