Monday
We made a schema chart together and talked about what we already knew about penguins. After making our chart, the class was let loose to explore a variety of non-fiction books about penguins. When they found a new fact about penguins, they wrote it on a sticky note and added it to our chart.
We also incorporated penguins into our math. We sang a song called Percy Penguin and talked about equally sharing fish between two penguins. The class drew a number and then acted out sharing that number of fish between 2 penguins. They then recorded their findings onto a worksheet and decided if the number was equal or not.
Tuesday
On Tuesday we started learning some new vocabulary and we started with regurgitate. They loved the gross factor and it tied in really nicely with the owl unit we did a month ago. We acted out the word and then came up with a definition and picture for it. Rich vocabulary is great for common core. We also worked on making a table of contents for our non-fiction writing book about penguins.
Here's the book box!
Wednesday
Today we learned about how the males and females take care of the penguin egg. This video is amazing and really helps it come to life. After watching the video, I gave each student an egg and we walked around and saw how hard it is to keep an egg balanced on top of our feet. The next activity we did was to create a diagram of a penguin. We reviewed scientific drawings and labeled blubber, feathers, flipper, beak, and feet.
Thursday
Today, we focused on a fiction book about penguins. So of course I chose Tacky, who doesn't love Tacky? We read the book, then talked about character qualities of Tacky and talked about the moral of the story. We also did some quick retelling to work on our summarizing skills. Here is the anchor chart and worksheet we did after reading the book!
